Health classes explained

How the categories Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard operate and what determines which one applies to you.

Insurance carriers evaluate term life premiums using health rating tiers. Terminology shifts slightly between companies, though the general ranking holds: Preferred Plus (sometimes Super Preferred or Preferred Elite), Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard, plus special rates for higher risks. Smokers and nicotine users occupy their own tier sequence at higher costs.

What underwriters look at

Body composition metrics, arterial pressure and lipid numbers, relative risk from heart or malignancy, past moving violations, medication history, line of work, hobbies, and nicotine in any form. Preferred Plus requires clean outcomes across virtually everything; Preferred permits some variation; Standard Plus and Standard allow well-managed conditions, for instance medicated hypertension.

How to use the quote tool

The health section asks you to assess your condition truthfully: Excellent lines up with Preferred Plus, Very good with Preferred, Good with Standard Plus, and Average with Standard. Your quote uses that category; the carrier establishes the real tier following underwriting. Not sure? Get quotes at two different tiers to compare, then proceed through the application. Overstating your health doesn't reduce your final price—it only makes the quote less accurate.

The agency can point you to carriers with underwriting rules that work better for your circumstances, and this often matters more than chasing the lowest base rate.
